Drinking water supplier for Borna and ten other towns and municipalities in the south of Leipzig.
The association supplies around 70,000 residents with drinking water and has more than 802 kilometres of drinking water pipes, as well as two of its own plants in Borna. In addition, the ZBL disposes wastewater for around 22,000 residents via more than 159 kilometres of transport systems, local sewer systems and three wastewater treatment plants under its own management.
The background to the project is the cooperation between the town of Irpin and the town of Borna, which has existed since 2016. Both cities have been cooperating for years, for example in the area of volunteer fire brigades. There is also an existing cooperation between Bergisch Gladbach and the city of Bucha, which is also supplied with drinking water from Irpinvodokanal.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine destroyed essential drinking water supply infrastructure. This affected pumping stations, pipelines and vehicles, among other things, and prompted ZBL and BELKAW GmbH to enter into a partnership with Irpinvodokanal in August 2023.
The partnership focuses on the procurement of materials for the restoration and repair of Ukrainian infrastructure. To this end, ZBL intends to procure five wastewater pumps for the Irpinvodokanal.
Furthermore, ZBL and BELKAW GmbH are working on acquiring additional pumps for the drinking water sector for the Ukrainian partner. Delivery of the pumps is scheduled for the first quarter of 2024.
