SU Canal Comrat
SU Canal Comrat was founded by the local council of the town of Comrat. Comrat, the capital of the Gagauzia region with a population of 26,400, is located in the south of the Republic of Moldova. The municipal water company Su Canal Comrat supplies almost all of the city's households, around 9,450, with water and disposes of the wastewater from around 3,600 households and economic operators.
The total length of the water supply pipes in operation is approximately 146 km and the sewerage system 36 km.

The main tasks of the LWG are the safe supply of drinking water and the environmentally friendly disposal of wastewater. The LWG supplies around 125,000 people with drinking water. LWG currently operates a total of eight waterworks. In addition, LWG is responsible for ensuring that the wastewater of around 122,000 inhabitants in our supply area is professionally treated and returned to the water cycle. LWG acts on behalf of the local authorities and operates a total of nine wastewater treatment plants. The Cottbus wastewater treatment plant is the largest municipal wastewater treatment plant in the state of Brandenburg.
The project
Comrat is the capital of the autonomous region of Gagauzia in the south of the Republic of Moldova and is predominantly inhabited by Gagauz people. Comrat is located around 100 kilometres south of the state capital Chișinău on the right bank of the river Jalpuch.
The partnership serves to exchange knowledge and practical experience, proven expertise on operational, technical, financial and management issues in order to strengthen the capacities of Su Canal Comrat.
Objectives
Su Canal Comrat identified the following problem areas:
- Large water losses due to old networks and water theft;
- high electricity costs;
- non-functional sewage treatment plant;
- low connection rate to the sewerage system;
- insufficient resources to improve the water and sanitation infrastructure.
As a first step, the cooperation will focus on reducing energy consumption, increasing the use of renewable energies and developing a guideline for action, including for the renovation of the wastewater and water sewer network in Comrat. An important component is the transfer of knowledge in the management of municipal wastewater networks and treatment plants.
The exchange will take place through virtual meetings as well as working visits in the Republic of Moldova and in Germany. The 6-month period will be used to review Su Canal Comrat's existing infrastructure, identify optimisation opportunities and then implement the measures described in coordination with Su Canal Comrat as far as possible and as required.
