From 5th to 13th March 2023, a delegation from HAMBURG WASSER was in Amman to participate at the Arab Water Week (AWW) and to work with their peer colleagues from Miyahuna on site at the water production facilities and in the laboratories.

The AWW is a big regional water conference for the Arabic region, where water professionals from mainly the Arabic countries meet and share their expertise. HAMBURG WASSER was a knowledge partner of the AWW and hosted one session: “Utilities` Cooperation through Water Operators` Partnerships (WOPs)”. Colleagues from Miyahuna and HAMBURG WASSER, Malak AL-Ma'aitah, Karam Koudary, Ghassan Al-Salhi, Dr. Christoph Czekalla and Dr. Claudia Wendland, presented the WOP activities and shared the results on water production optimization in Miyahuna`s water works Zai.

For the last two years, the increased know-how in water treatment processes and the reduction of operating costs of USD 150,000 per year are particularly noteworthy. In a second WOP session, hosted by Waternet and focusing on sanitation and wastewater treatment, Idris Alhababseh presented the energy analysis of the wastewater treatment plant in Madaba, carried out together with hanseWasser Bremen.

Afterwards, the German experts spent three days on the water works and in the drinking water and wastewater laboratories of Miyahuna to meet their peer colleagues on site and to discuss their challenges within the two defined work packages "water production" and "water quality".

Water production: process optimization for the water production, inter alia change and reduction of the chemical dosage based on the results of jar tests, which were carried out during the mission, were proposed that can lead again to considerable saving of running costs without jeopardising the water quality.

Water quality: The laboratory staff had an intensive exchange about the different analytical methods, sampling and benchmarking methods. They also discussed processes and documentation in quality management. As a result, a laboratory twinning agreement was concluded for the next 1.5 years.

The final day concluded with a meeting with his excellency, the CEO of Miyahuna, where all results were shared and following activities agreed upon.

Looking forward to the next 15 months of joint WOP activities!
