As part of the Solidarity Utility Partnership (and the Hamburg Solidarity Pact with Kyiv), five colleagues from the municipal water utility "Kyivvodokanal" from Kyiv visited Hamburg for job shadowing from 27 November to 2 December 2023.

For over a year, Hamburg Wasser has been exchanging information with its Ukrainian colleagues on topics relating to water treatment and the use of geographic information systems (GIS) in network operations. Until now, cooperation in the field of GIS has only taken place in online workshops. This has now been intensified through face-to-face dialogue.

During their visit to Hamburg, the delegation from Kyiv showed great interest in Hamburg Wasser's innovative approaches and best practices, including the linking of GIS and SAP during the daily operation of the pipeline networks. Processes related to maintenance and repair in pipe network operations were explained in detail during intensive discussions. The Ukrainians were particularly impressed by the maintenance and remote control of underground valves using electric valve turning devices and acoustic leckage detection (using acoustic loggers and listening devices).

The GIS documentation and web GIS were also of interest to the Ukrainian colleagues. The delegation paid particular attention to the use of offline maps when using the mobile GIS. They also learned about the hydraulic modelling of the drinking water network and about customer management at Hamburg Wasser. On the last day of their stay in Hamburg, they visited the Köhlbrandhöft sewage treatment plant in bright sunshine.

The job shadowing helped to strengthen the cooperation between the two partners and explore further opportunities for future collaboration.
